Dyrhólaey to Jökulsárlón - The South Coast with Scott, Day 1

Pictures are at the bottom...

Scott came to visit! He spent a fair bit of time recuperating after the rigors of a round the world trip, most recently having come by train across Russia from Mongolia, but we did get out of town too.

Jared and Nerida chose option a) "Risk life and limb on uncharted wilderness trekking" Scott, chose option c) "Car camping and sightseeing along the south coast. (speak to your travel agent about the options available!)

First stop, Dyrhólaey. The scene of all period movies set in Iceland, and generally a cool place. Dyrhólaey itself is just an arch in the sea, but the area is wonderful. We had a great morning exploring right up the beach, until we were finally cut off by the cliffs meeting the surf.

The rock stacks were amazing. As soon as we walked down the slope to the beach itself, the cliffs started to be covered in stacks of rocks. Wonderful.

The geology of the area is just amazing too. It is Iceland after all :)

Dinner at Vík, then off on down the road past Skaftafell to Jökulsárlón. I'd been keeping this a secret, even to the point of trying to distract him with things out to see as we headed up towards the bridge. But a turn of the head, and then a yell, "ICEBERGS!" Scott was amazed. Jökulsárlón is a beautiful place.

A campsite for the night amongst the backroads in the area, the south coast might be remote and desolate, but it's pretty fair game for camping.
